Apparently this is built to assume ISA extensions too new for my CPU.

That's not the problem I'm reporting though. The problem is that I had to use --command=sh and manually run ./gui-wrapper.sh inside the resulting shell to get it to say "Illegal instruction"

You can try to drop the exec in the wrapper script.
