Coastal DEM Workshop – August 13, 2026 report-back #17

Description

@camante

Thanks again for helping us host the NOAA NCEI/CIRES Coastal DEM Workshop on August 13, 2026. The workshop went very smoothly, and the NMFS-Openscapes JupyterHub worked well for the event.

Workshop overview

The two-hour workshop introduced participants to reproducible open-source workflows for coastal DEM generation using tools from the Continuous DEMs project.

Participants worked through examples for Newport, Oregon, and Sarasota, Florida, including:

  • source-data access and processing;
  • vertical datum harmonization;
  • coastal DEM generation;
  • inspection of source/provenance information; and
  • independent DEM validation.

Participation

More than 50 participants joined the workshop and used the shared JupyterHub environment during the session.

How it went

Overall, the workshop went very well. Participants were able to log into the shared environment and work through the material without needing to install or configure the Continuous DEMs software locally. The cloud environment was especially useful for allowing a relatively large group to work with the same software, datasets, and workflow at the same time.

Thanks again to the NMFS-Openscapes and 2i2c teams for making the workshop environment available and helping us prepare for the event.
