Proper labeling of landmarks through ARIA attributes is essential for an accessible reading experience. InDesign should implement two key attributes. When implementing landmark labels, it's important to prioritize using visible text as labels through aria-labelledby whenever possible, falling back to aria-label only when no appropriate visible text exists. Labels must be unique when multiple instances of the same landmark type appear in a HTML document, and these relationships need to be preserved when content splits across frames.

For this InDesign should implement two key attributes: aria-label and aria-labelledby.

aria-label

• Similar to alt-text but for HTML elements other than images
• Add to Object Export Options dialog alongside alt-text panel
• Allow direct text input for landmark labels

aria-labelledby

• Used when a text element (typically a heading) acts as the label for
  a landmark
• Implementation needs:
  • Automatic detection of headings (h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6) within landmark elements (main, section, article, nav, aside, header, footer)
  • Auto-generation of IDs for heading elements
  • Connection between landmark and its heading via aria-labelledby attribute
  • Override mechanism: if aria-label is present, it takes precedence over aria-labelledby

Hi @jonaslil, I need your input on a design question.

Our UI currently includes a dropdown with three options for labeling: Automatic, Custom label, and None.

• Automatic → we emit aria-labelledby
• Custom label → we emit aria-label with a user-defined value
• None → we do not emit any ARIA labeling attribute

Now,

1. Do we need the “None” option?
2. Which option should be the default in the dropdown out of these 3?

Yes, we think it's useful in some cases where you don't want any labels.

The [Automatic] one.

Will these settings also be present in the object style?

Hi @gregoriopellegrino , currently we are supporting this feature only in object export options as object styles was not considered in 21.1 timeline

ARIA Landmark have been implemented in the ID21.1.0.42 pre-release build, along with the following known issue.

ID-4273447 : "Automatic" selection for ARIA Label is not working.

This is to inform we have fixed below issue on Pre-release ID21.1.0.54.
Fixed issue:
ID-4273447 : "Automatic" selection for ARIA Label is not working.

Known issue :
ID-4273589 : ARIA label is missing for threaded frame.
ID-4274001 : Spaces disappear from custom label text once user open dialog box again or choose any other option from ARIA label drop-down.

We have supported ARIA LanMarks in the Object style as well.
All the open items on these are addressed and part of the InDesign pre-release builds, latest from 21.2.0.15
