@gtully, I'd love your input here to confirm this restores backwards compatibility.

Also, I'd appreciate if you could help me flesh out the update to versions.adoc. Right now it's pretty vague.

That is perfect and versions is a reasonable place to put the deprecation notice, thanks Justin

The blurb in versions.adoc mention that the properties are deprecated, but it doesn't say where the properties are used because I wasn't sure about that. Can you provide any details on that?

The broker control JMX status attribute is a json blob. The properties are used in there for each properties file loaded by the broker. Only programmetic users of that attribute will notice.
