GSchema: remove system settings from default items#562
Conversation
maybe a more radical proposal? You can get to system settings from right clicking the desktop and from the Quick Settings menu these days, so it feels less needed to have it right in the dock. Especially since ideally you mostly set and forget and use the panel for anything you have to change often and aren't frequently opening up System Settings

Following up with some of the feedback from social media. The poll I ran has about 200 responses with an almost even split, slightly in favor of removing the system settings dock item. Of the comments arguing in favor of keeping it, the majority carried the same basic theme that access to system settings when first installing is important but after that it’s not needed in the dock. So even for people that think it should be in the dock by default, their concern is mainly about discoverability in a first install. I think this is/should be covered already by Onboarding. On the last onboarding page (which you see even if you skip all) we do call out system settings directly. However I’ve also opened an issue to expand our onboarding onto system settings to make sure we’re really covered here: |

I'm on board 👍.
Access is also available through the quick settings menu (which to me is also a very natural place to look), so I think there is an argument that being in the dock is redundant anyway.
